Motorcycle
Safety Training & TOURS - Hot Springs, Arkansas
Update - We have finished our first year as Arkansas
Rider Training after having put about 200 prospective motorcyclists through the
Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic Rider and Experienced Rider Courses. What started with Charlie Moore, a box of
cones and an MSF certification in 2003 has blossomed into a fun partnership and
a training program that attracts students from all over Arkansas. We now operate with a dozen motorcycles in
two different Hot Springs locations and have a deep bench of seriously
experienced Rider Coaches to teach with us.
We have taught a lot but have also learned a lot from other coaches and
students.
We
have found that newbie and even experienced riders want to know more about how
their motorcycles work and should be maintained so we now offer maintenance
workshops for our graduates. We charge
$25 for the 4-5 hour sessions and an extra $5 if the participants want lunch
from the Mexican grocery store. Input
from two of our Rider Coaches that are factory trained service technicians
really makes these sessions shine. It
also gives our sponsoring motorcycle dealers a chance to strut their stuff.
This
fall we invited some riders who have helped us out in one way or another to
join us on an 800 mile weekend tour of the Arkansas and a little of Missouri. We did some great riding, ate like fools and
had a lot of laughs. I've often gotten
requests from out of state readers of Arkansas Rider's Guide to do Ozark
motorcycle tours. This shake-down tour
was a rough version of a tour we hope to offer riders in the near future.

Arkansas - Oklahoma - Kansas MSTA ERC Class
this Spring
Currently, we have eight members who have
expressed interest in attending an ERC Class on April 29, 2006. We plan to have the class on Saturday and do
a lunch ride on Sunday. Some of us will
be utilizing our various club affiliations to pay the fee registration, which is a special MSTA price of $65. The class will be conducted in Hot
Springs. Please contact Robert Bashaw
870-460-9570 or Artravlr@Seark.Net
to be registered. The course takes five to seven hours to
complete. Some insurance companies
offer discounts for course completion and MSTA membership is
not required.
Greetings Fans of "Ride The Rio"!
OK, RTR is still three months away, so maybe the
title of this email "RTR Fast Approaching" is a bit misleading.
However, I did want to let you know that plans are well underway for the 14th
"Ride The Rio" and things are expected to run much as they did last
year.
First, we will again be based at the Chisos Mining
Company Motel at Easter Egg Valley in Terlingua. Those of you who stayed there
last year, know it's not the biggest place and we will fill it up - so
you'll need to reserve your room EARLY. However, the CMCM has told us that they
will not accept reservations until three months prior to RTR - in other words,
right now.
Also, like last year, there will be a choice for
you on Thursday, Feb 16, 2006. You can either go to Ft. Davis for the RTR
kick-off party at Cueva de Leon, or you can go to CMCM in Terlingua for a
cook-out. If you're new to RTR, the kick-off party in Ft Davis is cool because
you have a great/fun meal Thursday night at Cueva, then you get to ride the
fantastic "Ft. Davis Loop" Friday morning, then head south to
Terlingua. However, if you prefer to get an extra day of riding in the Big Bend
area, as many dual sport riders do, then join the gang for a Thursday night
cook-out at the CMCM. Please RSVP to me if you're going to Ft. Davis so I can
get a good head-count for the restaurant. And, if you plan on going to
Terlingua instead, please know the cook-out is "BYOM" - bring your
own MEAT for grilling, and a few dollars to contribute to the salads, desserts,
etc (if you're riding, and can't bring your own meat, let me know and we can
bring something for you).
It should be noted, Thursday night in either Ft
Davis or Terlingua is NOT part of the official RTR festivities - you're on your
own, so to speak - surrounded by your closest friends.
What else?
Oh - there will be a group meeting for breakfast in
Kerrville at the Cracker Barrel just south of I-10 Thursday (2/16) morning.
From there, you can ride or drive to your destination of Terlingua or Ft.
Davis.
Minor changes will be made to the RTR web site in
the coming weeks, but most of the important things (dates and places) are set
and already online.
Want to go to Mexico after RTR? Like years past,
Tim Vipond will head this up. Send him an email with your questions. tvipond@houston.rr.com
That's all for now. Chris, Patty, Tonie, and I are
all anxious to see you and for February to arrive!
Dave
